Surprisingly an entertaining and interesting read taking you into the back rooms of AFL football. Mark Thompson has been a successful player and coach with a few speed humps along the way and he tells us all with general openness. The AFL does not come out of it well in my opinion and nor do various periods where clubs have had poor facilities and operated on luck and a prayer. We learn a little more about the drugs drama during the Hird era and how some seem to have been made scapegoats for others. There is 346 pages comprising text, index, photos and samples of his coaching papers. This is one of the better books on Australian football and if you follow Geelong or Essendon you’ll like it even more.
